In May 2008 I bought a recording on the label Timpani, with the Symphony No 1 & 2, performed by the Beethoven Academie, led by Herve Niquet. I was very impressed by that recording, but the present one is in all respects better, not the least because the fragments of Gounod's third symphony are also recorded on this disc.
The concentrated drive, the working out of countless small melodies, the many extras Caetani brings to Gounod's music is sheer endless, and makes these works sound new and fresh from the box. The bonus of two movements from the unfinished third symphony is a wonderful addition. I got so much enjoyment out of this disc, exhilarating as it is, that after the final note it left me totally in awe for this performance.
State of the Art recording.
